Neuro IR Service Line

Neurointerventional radiology first began with catheter-based diagnostic angiography of the brain, but now includes cutting-edge therapeutic procedures such as thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke, embolization and pipeline stent diversion for cerebral aneurysms, extracranial and intracranial stenting, and many other endovascular therapies. Percutaneous treatment of spinal disease is another area of advancement in the specialty. It is a multidisciplinary subspecialty including trainees from radiology, neurosurgery, and neurology. While it is not solely a subspecialty of interventional radiology, some interventional radiologists may pursue further training in this area, which most frequently involves one fellowship year of diagnostic neuroradiology, followed by one to two fellowship years of neurointerventional training.

The goal of this service line is to serve as an educational resource for anyone hoping to learn more about the procedures and the clinical decisions involved in neurointerventional radiology, how to pursue a career as a dual-trained interventional and neurointerventional radiologist, as well as new developments within the field, through informative posts, interviews, webinars, journal review articles, and clinical survival guides.
